West Bengal: In a major crackdown on illegal infiltration, the West Bengal police have arrested 22 Rohingya nationals who were reportedly living in Hyderabad for several years before coming to Bengal. The arrests have highlighted growing concerns about the organised movement of illegal migrants and misuse of the Indian identity system.

According to police sources, the men were found without valid documents and are suspected of having entered India illegally through the porous eastern border, possibly from Myanmar via Bangladesh. The group had settled in Hyderabad in Telangana, where they had been living in anonymity for a long time.

While officials did not reveal the names or specific charges against the 22 accused, the arrests come just weeks after a separate incident in Hyderabad, where four Rohingyas - including a husband and wife pair - were arrested for allegedly forging Aadhaar cards, PAN numbers and voter IDs to avail public services and banking facilities.

Security agencies have repeatedly warned of the growing presence of Rohingya infiltrators in Indian cities, with intelligence suggesting that some groups are actively involved in creating fake documents, which are then used to settle in various Indian states.

This latest operation in West Bengal points to a possible network that is facilitating the movement of illegal immigrants, perhaps after initial detection or to evade investigation after security has been tightened in an area.

Officials have invoked sections of the Foreign Act and the Indian Penal Code relating to forgery, cheating and illegal entry. Further investigations are underway to find out their handlers, entry routes and whether more infiltrators have been moved internally.
